The Chawan Workshop: Traditional Tea bowl

With a background in interior design and a ceramics training in Normandy, Antonia approaches clay through a sensitivity to architecture, material, and the relationship between object and space. During a residency in Onishi, Japan, in 2024, an introduction to the Chawan (Japanese tea bowl) and its connection to ritual and everyday life became an important influence on their practice.

Inspired by this experience, this 2.5-hour workshop invites participants to explore the art of making a chawan by hand. Rather than focusing on perfect symmetry, we'll embrace the tactile qualities of clay, paying attention to balance, proportion, texture, and the subtle dialogue between light, shadow, emptiness, and form.

Suitable for beginners and experienced makers alike, the workshop offers an introduction to handbuilding while encouraging a slower, more mindful approach to making. Each participant will create a unique tea bowl that reflects their own gestures and creative process, while learning about the history, philosophy, and contemporary relevance of this iconic ceramic form.
